CALCULATION GUIDE

How to use the overtime calculator

Enter total hours worked, hourly rate, the overtime threshold you want to apply and an overtime multiplier. WorkTimeCheck separates regular and overtime hours and shows the estimated regular pay, overtime pay and combined gross amount.

WORKED EXAMPLE

With 45 total hours, a $20 hourly rate, a 40-hour threshold and a 1.5× multiplier, the estimate is 40 regular hours plus 5 overtime hours for $950 gross pay.

Overtime calculation formula

The calculator first separates total hours at the threshold you enter. Regular pay equals regular hours × hourly rate. Overtime pay equals overtime hours × hourly rate × the multiplier you enter. The two amounts are then added for the estimated gross pay.

For 45 hours at $20 per hour with a 40-hour threshold and 1.5× multiplier, regular pay is $800 and overtime pay is $150, for an estimated $950 total.

Why the threshold and multiplier are editable

Overtime rules and employment arrangements are not identical in every situation. WorkTimeCheck therefore exposes the arithmetic assumptions instead of deciding which rule applies to you. Enter the threshold and multiplier appropriate for the calculation you are checking.

Important overtime limitations

This calculator is not a payroll determination. It does not determine exempt or non-exempt status, the legally required regular rate, treatment of bonuses or commissions, daily overtime, double time, special work periods or jurisdiction-specific requirements. Verify the applicable rules and payroll records before making employment or legal decisions.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Is WorkTimeCheck free?

Yes. WorkTimeCheck calculators are free to use and do not require an account.

Are my time entries uploaded?

No. The calculator runs in your browser; WorkTimeCheck does not require you to submit employee time records to use the tool.

How is overtime pay calculated?

For this estimate, hours above your entered threshold are multiplied by your hourly rate and overtime multiplier. Regular hours are paid at the entered base rate.

Can I change the overtime threshold?

Yes. The threshold and multiplier are editable so you can model the calculation rule you need.

Does this determine whether I am legally entitled to overtime?

No. Overtime eligibility and the legally required regular rate can depend on employment classification, jurisdiction and other compensation. This tool only applies the arithmetic inputs you provide.
